Speaking after the meeting, Akhilesh Yadav stated that the present political struggle is “not just about elections, but about saving the country and democracy.” He stressed that opposition parties must unite to confront what he described as “dishonesty” in the electoral process. According to him, there is a collective responsibility among opposition forces to resist alleged misuse of power and democratic institutions.
Akhilesh Yadav further alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party initially experimented with unfair electoral practices in Uttar Pradesh and later expanded the same approach on a much larger scale in West Bengal. He claimed that opposition parties now have an obligation to stand together against such tactics. He also reiterated that the Samajwadi Party fully supports Mamata Banerjee and her political party in facing these challenges.
During the meeting, Mamata Banerjee warmly received Akhilesh Yadav and honored him with a traditional ceremonial shawl, reflecting a visible gesture of mutual respect and political solidarity.
The discussions also addressed concerns related to post-election violence and law-and-order situations in West Bengal. Issues were raised regarding attacks on political workers, alleged violence involving supporters of the Trinamool Congress, and incidents of political party offices being vandalized or set on fire.
Akhilesh Yadav questioned the effectiveness of large-scale central security deployment during elections, stating that despite the presence of more than 300,000 security personnel, incidents of violence and unrest continued in several regions.
The meeting is being interpreted as a key indicator of increasing efforts among regional political parties to strengthen anti-government unity. It underscores a broader attempt to consolidate opposition forces ahead of crucial electoral contests across the country.
